This week on The Next Reel, Andy and I kick off our guilty pleasure series. The whole idea started as a goof, a way to fill in a few weeks' worth of shows that we could pre-record since we both would be on summer vacation. We would each pick a film that we were ashamed to love, and spring them on each other in a great unveiling.
We probably over-thought the whole magilla. We went round and round with what makes a great guilty pleasure? and is it OK if it's a cult favorite? and how do I know if your guilt will equal my guilt? I think Andy probably won this round, in that he picked a film that is worth legitimate shame. That comes next week. This week, my pick: The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension.
I love this movie. It's filled with such a glorious sense of play, a palpable air of what should we do next that drives not only the adventure, but the elitism of it — at no point to the cater to the audience, rather they expect the viewer to do their share of the interpretive heavy lifting along the way.
It's a whole bunch of nonsense, but if you're a fan of Buckaroo, you should zip over to The Next Reel right now and check out our official write-up. Or, you can listen to the show right here.
