The first cut is the deepest

I think this is the most painful shot I've made over the last few months. This sweetheart was playing in the driveway and accidentally dropped her doll—a doll with a precious china head—face down on the bricks. The face of the doll shattered tragically, leaving a mostly headless grotesque.

So, this photo was taken about five seconds after she picked up the body, the first time she cradled it to her chest, staring at the pieces of face on the ground in front of her.

Dark, I know. But she's so sweet. Wrapped up in the look on her face is every feeling of pain and glee I remember as a child.

Tomorrow, I'm going to find a picture of a clown car. I'm through with sad kids for a while.
